"Henrici Khunrath Lips. Utriusque Medic. Doct. Confessio De Chao Physico-Chemicorum Catholico: In Quo Catholice habitat Azoth sive Materia Prima Mundi, h.e. Mercurius Sapientum: Ubi Magnesiae (Subiecti videlicet Lapidis Philosophorum Catholici) conditiones fideliter recensentur"

To the Reader, Greeting.

By right, concerning every matter, it is first usually asked whether it exists; then, what it is. That the Philosopher’s Stone exists, founded upon the Seven (who are not the Number, according to the father of lies, of falsehood, but rather sacred to truth, mysterious with the sanctity of truth, according to Holy Scripture the Spirit of truth) has been demonstrated with apodictic proofs and adamantine figures.

From the Amphitheater of Eternal Wisdom, etc., our third [work]:
What it is will be evident, both from its definition set forth by us in the same place, and from the present confession.

Enjoy these things happily; and farewell.

At Magdeburg, in the course of travel.
In the year from the Incarnate Word 1596,
on the day of St. Giles.

I.
Of Henricus Khunrath of Leipzig, Doctor of Medicine.

Confession concerning the Chaos of the Physico-Chemical Catholics;
in which the Azoth, or the First Matter of the World, that is, the Mercury of the Sages, dwells universally; where also the Magnesia (namely, the subject of the Philosophers’ Stone of the Catholic Philosophers) is faithfully described in its conditions.

Whether (I knowingly speak): for I speak Theosophically in the Oratory, Physico-Chemically in the Laboratory, as a Philosopher as befits a philosopher, that I have treated, examined, weighed, and balanced, is found in the greater World (from whose Womb, Nature alone, acting as midwife, has brought it forth into the light, excluded from concealment): the Catholic Macrocosmicon, naturally triune; which (with respect to its powers) has become known to the Catholic Sages, that is, by Inspiration and Revelation (both mediately and immediately, whether by sleeping or waking), through Divine disclosure from above, from the beginning.

Theosophically (by the will of Jehovah, since His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting, upon those who fear Him, Psalm 103:17).

So likewise it may be granted also to us; either from His Natural Signature, or from the instruction of some Master, sent to us (or to whom we have been sent) by God.

I, in part, have it from a Master — may it be well with him forever, Amen — and in part truly from Divine Revelation.

The Signature I will express:

It is certainly (I speak with Hermes from the Tabula Smaragdina) the strength of all strength, strong in strength; strongly penetrating and conquering the power of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.

Whence it is most ancient; therefore also Adrop, that is, Saturnus (who among the Gentiles was reckoned as Time), of the Philosophers; under whose rule truly was the Golden Age.

Although further symbolic explanations of this Name still exist in deeper matters things, among the Wise; nor unknown to me.

This Triune is the son of the Greater World, the Microcosm of the Macrocosm, Catholic, not according to the existence of human kind (consubstantial parentage); since it consists of Earth and Water (whence Hermes: its father is the Sun, its mother the Moon), for the Catholics, as it were, Matter of one and the same Substance, Essence, and Condition of which shall be those primordial Chaos of Genesis 1 creation: unless that this Earth today is not void and empty; for the Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world (Wisdom 1:7).

Mediated by the aethereal Spirit (as it were, a Medium between Matter and Form), that is, Schamaim, namely Heaven (through fiery-watered Spirit / watery fiery Spirit / or fiery spiritual water: for Schamaim By the Hebrews it is called as though Esch va maim, that is, Fire and Water, the Animated Spark, Ruach Elohim (as though Form, Entelechia), that is, Spirit or Breath (as the Hebrews say), of the Triune God, Genesis 1, brooding over the waters, and filling the world of the Earth; that is, the Anima mundi or Soul of the World, or Nature (which force, emanating from Jehovah Himself; an Emanation indeed of the conception of the Divine Mind, of the Divine Ruler of Things) to be produced in the World of the future: for Nature, indeed, orthodox Antiquity most devoutly affirmed to be φωνὴ Θεοῦ (the voice of God); Catholic, or universal Nature: whence also it ascribed to itself the name Θεοκόσμος (Theocosmos); in which dwells, in a catholic manner, the whole plenitude of all Nature σωματικῶς (somatically), that is, corporally.

Since, in the womb of the Greater World (from which its Son has here been naturally brought forth into the light) virginal, that is, Earth void and empty (for it had not yet conceived before), the Spirit of the Lord having conceived, a Body was formed, in the beginning of the World.

Does not Jehovah say: Heaven is my throne, but the Earth the footstool of my feet (Isaiah 66; Matthew 5:35; Acts 7:49).

And thus the Ruach Elohim, the Spirit or Breath of God, went forth as Nature; σπορὰ ἄφθαρτος (an incorruptible seed), the immortal seed of mundane things it was, that from Him (my Master teaching) in the Laboratory, Physico-Chemically manifested, I had seen the Physico-Chemical Leonem Viridem; the Duenach Viride; Venus, namely the fecundity of Nature coming forth to all things; our Vitriol.

I had observed the Green Line of the Cabalists, revolving universally; I had smelled, I had tasted, the Blessed Viridity of the Physico-Magorum, which makes all things sprout forth causing to germinate. Whoever shall have seen, smelled, tasted the Lion of Nature conquering all things, drawn forth and extracted by artifice from the caverns of its Saturnine Mountain; and likewise its own proper Blood; why should it not rightly be granted him to speak concerning it?

There are indeed (I admit, that I may reply to an objection) Sparks of the Soul of the World even dispersed throughout and in the Universe (in whatsoever places) yet particular sparks [are found] particularly in particular things, whence also those things themselves are such; or specific [sparks] in certain species; for to each private thing a private [spark] is attributed: hence the saying of the Chemists, as many stones as there are things, to be understood of the particular or specified [ones].

But the Spark of the Universal Soul of Nature, by universal virtue, in this Natural Triune (which has been spoken of) is to be understood synoptically as the Universal Macrocosmicon, not Human: whence the Divine and Universal Stone.

This Triune is Catholic, not particular; not specified, as a Metal or Mineral, for example, Gold, Silver, even if loosed from the bonds of coagulations, so that they flow, being relaxed, that is, as the unlearned common folk call it, Mercurialized, or as if so; or else scarcely embryonated as in native gold, washed gold, glass, and red-golden ore is found; and by the artifice of fire extracted from it, manifested and separated.)

That most famous and long-celebrated thing, which has so miserably held countless men fascinated (dare I bring it forth?), Hydrargyrum and the like (silver enough! to prepare the Stone of the Wise from it! — a name and omen it has, but in truth) Vitriol, Antimony, sulphur, cinnabar (both kinds), etc. Or Animal, such as seed, urine, blood, afterbirth, breath, flesh, bones, etc. Nay, not even the whole man himself, much less any part of him whatsoever; or Vegetable, such as wine, celandine, grain, etc.

Nor anything (even though it be subtle or pure) taken from or derived from any of these (whether by Nature or by Art): for there stands in the way for among many other things especially Specification, which Universal excludes altogether) but, as I said, it is Catholic, and this Triune, namely of Earth and Water indeed, impregnated by Heaven through the mediation of Ruach Elohim, that is, with body, spirit, and soul; or (as others say) with Sulphur and Salt, Mercury and Nature; composed by Nature alone, without any aid of Art: the Microcosmus of the Microcosm Macrocosmic, not the Microcosm (such as Man, the human Microcosm of the Macrocosm, who would be specified in and to the human species); but something Peculiar, Mineral, Animal, and Vegetable, Catholic at once.

Wherefore also the Philosophers have called it Nihil and Chaos — these are its Names.

It is also called Omnia; the reason is, because it is of that very First Matter (ὕλη Prima), in a state still Primordial and Universal, from which Minerals, Animals, Vegetables, indeed all Material things altogether derived their origin; even Adam himself, the first-formed. Whence that saying: Adam brought with him the Stone’s Matter out of Paradise.

Wherefore, from the state of his emptiness, by Physico-Chemical Regeneration, unto the state (on account of more-than-perfection) of Glorification, he was sublimated or exalted.

This Triune is powerful naturally and physico-artificially to act and operate upon all things which have arisen from the Prima Materia. Whence it is called Elixir, that is, Strength.

Then, because it contains in itself All things, which it requires for the constitution of its own being.

For in it is the Monad; Chaos; ὕλη; the Green Lion: the Binary; Matter and Form; Sun and Moon; Red and White; Male and Female; King and Queen: the Ternary; Body, Spirit, and Soul — that is Earth and Water, Heaven, Ruach Elohim; or Sulphur and Salt, Mercury, and Nature:

The Quaternary — Earth, Water, Air, Fire;

The Quintessence (which is the Anima Mundi) animated.

By Vulcanic and Neptunic [operation] (mark well), the impure Binary is rejected, and the purified Ternary, washed by the circumrotation of the Quaternary, unto the Monad of more-than-perfection, by Physico-Chemical regeneration, shall be reduced to Simplicity, Behold the Denary, the Symbol of Perfection.

Behold, Omnia! This Universal [Stone] of the Philosophers.

By this First Matter all metals, gems, stones, etc. are Physico-Chemically reduced to the first matter — as I myself have seen; truly, by no other means.

Thus Gold, or Silver, etc., Metallic, without the corrosive and malignant spirits by the application (which many have hitherto desired, and many today still desire) of the Potable and Living thing, so that it cannot altogether be reduced into Metal, but may be able to operate perfectly: thus also you will truly dissolve Crystal, Pearls, Gems, etc.

Although the Gold and Silver of the Philosophers are of themselves living and vivifying, yet not those vulgar metallic [substances] of the common folk, separated by the Fire of Catholic Nature of our Catholic to be vivified, that is, into and unto the perfect act to be stimulated from potency.

This triple Natural [thing] in its glorified Body is the Stone of the Philosophers: it is Triune, Mineral, Animal, and Vegetable, which operates All things in All things, and in Everything: the Catholic Medicine, as much for animals and vegetables as for inferior metals; in whose single atom or one little drop Heaven, Earth, and Water, and also the Spirit of the Lord, or Nature; Catholic All.

What shall I say? In our Chaos there is the Salt of Wisdom and of the Wise Nature, the Catholicum: by which also the Sun (just as in the Philosophical Council concerning the Philosophical Fire, the secret, vivifying, Catholic, external one, not known to sophists, nor ever to be revealed, has been abundantly demonstrated to us); without whose application the labor of the Chemist, about which here is the discourse: all, even in and upon the due Matter, sterile, vain, and empty. Let them be frightened, and let them teach each one; the footsteps of Pontanus and of others, nothing (both naturally and physically–artificially) is more useful in the world.

Whence the Philosopher: He who works without Salt, is like one who wishes to shoot without a string.

This, common Salt, Stones, Gems, Fusible, Vitriol, Alum, and Soap of the wise; which the impure world cannot grasp; from whose belly flow living Waters and fountains of life; Honey and oil of salvation, Incombustible. In it are the Dew of Heaven and the Fatness of the Earth; because (as Hermes says) the wind carried it in its belly, and the Earth is its nurse. Wherefore the Philosophers have rightly said, that it is had in it above the Earth, from which Nature produces Metals in the Earth.

Thus fittingly agrees that of Isaiah 45:8. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain righteousness: let the earth open, and let it bring forth the Savior.

From the Lord (Jah, eternal Creator), who is Wonderful, and whose Wisdom, Goodness, and Omnipotence are without number, this has been done; and it is Marvelous in our eyes, that the Philosopher’s Stone should be the Ruach Elohim, by the intervention of the Ethereal Spirit.

That is, of Heaven, conceived and made Body in the virginal womb of the greater World; and with harmful things removed and banished, the Savior of the Macrocosm, restoring in It all things; and as a Type, from and in the Book of Nature, of our Lord Jesus Christ, the true promised Mashiach, Preserver and Savior, sin being abolished, of the human race, that is, of the Microcosm or the lesser World; and through Him being sent, His Person, by office, sacraments, doctrine, miracles, the doctrine of nature perpetually theosophical: Who also is the Stone itself, which the builders rejected (that is, seducers teaching heretically in the Church, Acts 4:11), made into the head of the corner: the Stone of offense, and the Rock of scandal; placed in Zion, the supreme Cornerstone, chosen, most precious: whoever shall believe in Him shall not be confounded.

And whoever shall fall (He that shall fall) upon this Stone, shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder. Neither is there salvation in any other. Psalm 118:22. Isaiah 8:14 & 28:16. Matthew 21:42. Acts 4:11. Romans 9:33. 1 Peter 2:7. For other foundation can no man lay, than that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus. 1 Corinthians 3:11. The chief corner Stone. Ephesians 2:20. Upon which Rock the building the Church of Christ is built; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it, Matthew 16:18.

O Symbolical Harmony of the Stone! Blessed and fortunate is he who understands it.
Pray to God in Spirit and Truth, that He may teach thee the Truth by Ruach Hhochmah, that is, the Spirit of the Wisdom of God.

Therefore not ineptly is the Stone of the Philosophers called for those building physically and medically in the Academies, alas, reject it, O sorrow!—that Stone which is called θεανθρωπός (God-man), (which, as the sacred pages teach, the builders in the Church rejected, Acts 4:11), a Type, and from that Doctrine, and from the Book of Nature, constant and perpetual among the Wise.

Just as in a peculiar book, in its own (συν-καιρῷ, “due time”), it can be sufficiently demonstrated by us.

When it sounds forth, Jew, Gentile, Turk, Atheist, those esteeming the Holy Scriptures (O God!) as trifles and of no value, can from the book of Nature, by sense and reason, be convinced of truth, and (with Divine grace cooperating) be converted to Christianity.

For this Art, as the Philosopher says, either finds or makes man devout and holy. How useful and necessary would this be in this age most perniciously disputatious and quarrelsome, let lovers of peace judge. Thrice and four times happy, happy and blessed, is he who Biblically, Macrocosmically and Microcosmically, in the Catholic Triune, has learned to know God, and Him whom He sent, Jesus Christ; Nature and the Creature; and himself.

Surely it is not given to everyone. Elohim alone could grant it. Ensoph! Ensoph! Ensoph! May God turn the caviller into better.

Now consider, my brother, how from the end of your Catholic intention there results for your operation the Subject Catholicon or Universal: from which not only (by the adaptation of fermentation) the Philosopher, the Physico-Chemist, may have Gold and Silver, but also, in this great hospital of God, be an almsgiver, and indeed also (Wisdom 13:1; Romans 1:20) of the Creator, and of Him whom He sent, Jesus Christ, the knowledge of the whole Christian Religion, the orthodox dogmas; and of the whole world, the knowledge and possession of the Arcana and Secrets of all things entirely, the Theosophist. Do not, O Christian, mock the truth: so it has pleased Jehovah the Wonderful; may the same also please me and thee.

This Adamic Land of the Philosophers, Catholic, Holy; in whose Paradise essentially is the Tree of Life; and the Tabernacle of Jehovah with men.

I speak also to thee, Cabalist! Urim. Thummim. Be satisfied.

In this Land, sown physically and chemically, either Gold or Silver, by the power of its Divine Fire, Wonderful.

This being moved, growing, and with its Power brought from Potentiality into Act, it will produce Roots and Trees, either golden-bearing or silver-bearing, according to the form both internal and external of both. By means of a suitable field, the like produces its like. For as the Seed, so the Sprout: in and from the Earth, made appropriate and assigned to it by Nature.

In the Soil of Azoth, physically and chemically, the Metals are regenerated and multiplied.

He to whom this is not well known, let him lay his hand upon the Philosophical furnace. Hence, physically and chemically, come Golden branches and fruits; hence, Silver ones. Hence Particular physical-chemical (God willing) I grant as various and true; outside of this Earth (on account of Nature’s perpetual decree) altogether no true transmutatory [thing].

Concerning Particulars (so improperly called) Separatory, I do not speak. For it is indeed a part or particle of its Whole; and the particular is universal of its own particular.

From the fables and trifles of pseudo-particularists, to Experience, with Reason, with right reason, I call upon both the universal and the daily.

Begone, base Chemist, with thy universals and particulars, fictitious, sophistical, and deceitful. What we seek is the Gift of God; and only to the faithful (according to that saying of Lully: If God should find a faithful heart, surely He would reveal this Art to him) is it graciously bestowed by God upon the Theosophists, not upon you light Theosophists poured forth from the jars of Bacchus; to adulterers; fornicators; gamblers; the avaricious; liars; the full of envy; perjurers; murderers; deceivers; the proud; inventors of evils: profaners of the name of Jehovah and of Christ the Redeemer, the Sacraments, His Passion, His Wounds, etc. (which almost at every moment they take in vain as Christians); filled with every malice.

This work of the Philosophers The Work; not of fantastical little brains, nor of idiotic or ignorant brothers. More fitting it would be, I testify the truth (if only you had) your consciences, that you should be in the barns of peasants threshing grain with flails, rather than presiding in the laboratories of Physico-Chemists over the labors of the Philosophers.

For the very Signature itself reveals you, what sort and how great you are. Distinguished indeed. Not Alchemy, Chemistry is good, unless it is with a good heart.

Only the good will see the Truth. Do you think, I ask, that God would cast pearls before swine, to those possessed by malice and diabolical wickedness? By no means. You yourselves, O Theosophists, must first be regenerated, before the regeneration of the Philosophical Stone and likewise the Multiplication of Metals may follow Physico-Chemically. Therefore, wash yourselves and be clean and pure, according to the command of the Lord, Isaiah 1:16.

Ah, how few today are truly Philosophers, imbued with a philosophy pure and sincere, which is the Spirit of God and Divine Illumination? From which arises the solid and true Knowledge of Divine and Human things: Science, not Opinion. Has there ever been a great man without Divine Inspiration?

Ah, how many there are who practice Alchemy Physico-Chemically? From the Catholic center of Truth to the circumference of lies and errors, nearly all have been led astray and have fallen away: very few are there who do not wander in the Labyrinth of Errors. Wherefore it is no wonder that they most miserably vanish away in the fantasies of opinions and of their labors. Always seeking, they never arrive at the end of Truth.

In summary: Particularism in itself is solecism. In the one Catholicism of the Macrocosm, Macrocosmically, Microcosmically, naturally Triune (which is in the Azoth of the World), lies the Salvation and Truth of Physico-Chemical matters, both particular and universal (of which here is treated). Elsewhere, nowhere. Let him grasp and understand, who can grasp and understand.

And since no one pleases to all, how then by this my confession do I? Be it so.

To precocious sciolists, supercilious and self-conceited Aristarchuses, Sceptics, Zoiluses, and Momuses, let this be the reply:

Es müsse einer viel zu thun haben / der einen jeden Narren solte klug machen.
(‘One would have much to do, who should make every fool wise.’)

Indeed, not even Christ Himself, amid so many and so great miracles wrought by Him (as far as I have read), ever made out of a fool or an ignorant one a wise man; much less should I achieve that.

I or Me ?

The remaining miserable crowd of the ignorant deserves rather mercy than reproach. God knows for whom, what, why, when, and how much. To be ridiculed by the wicked and by those ignorant of the mysteries of God and the secrets of Nature is almost to be praised; to please such is to be censured. To be pleasing to a few, and those few the theosophically learned, is a sign of truth. I do not care for the vulgar, profane; nor profanely or scholastically only, the learned.

What [say] the blind about colors?

More (God willing) about these things in the Amphitheatre of Eternal Wisdom, of the Only True [Wisdom], Christian-Cabalistic, Divine-Magical and Physico-Chemical, thrice-Triune, Catholic, ours; not long ago by us completed, most recently however revised and much enlarged, [shall be given] to the public, so that the good may sometimes benefit (perhaps) to be sent; according to whose Laws and Doctrine, in the Oratory Theosophically Praying, and in the Laboratory Physico-Chemically Working, we shall be able to do all things.

It could be asked: By what incentive, moved, have I brought forward this Confession (would that I had not, yet nevertheless beyond my will, the fruit of the Tree) into the midst? I candidly answer: By the Love of truth, of Conscience, of Christ Christian.

For, by the duty of my office, Physico-Medical, moved with pious zeal, I thought it right by law, with the talent entrusted to me by Jehovah, to benefit the sons and heirs of Doctrine with the fruits of true Wisdom; and also to aid Truth, by showing what is true, what false, in this so perverse age, with whatever strength might assist, Physico-Chemically; and likewise the Art so Divine, very useful and most necessary in recounting the secrets of Nature (no art being more excellent), to bring assisting hands to those almost utterly oppressed; yet, polluted and defiled by the wickednesses and sophistries of impostors everywhere (even in the courts of princes and nobles), so that today, without injury to reputation and good esteem, it is scarcely safe even for the more sincere philosophers to profess before good men the truth about it yet (alas! sorrow!) abuse has crept in.

Which, however, does not take away the substance of the matter: otherwise the Word of God, because of the abuse of heretics, would long ago also have become heretical. Which far be it from us to think, much less to say. May God bring an end to abuse; may He grant an end to the abuses of the goldmakers, namely, those who with deliberate design and deceitful counsel offer to the deceived either smoke or shadow. Let all the people say Amen; AMEN.

O Ruach Hhochmahel, assist, and henceforth be for me a familiar teacher, in Oratory, in the Laboratory, and in Life, as much Active as wholly Contemplative; so that, in all things, with Jehovah as Guide, I may rightly have to Will, to Know, to Be, and to Be Able. Amen.

Hallelu-IAH! Hallelu-IAH! Hallelu-IAH! Hallelu-IAH!
Begone, Devil.

Most Holy Triune, All.

The simplicity of truth is the friendly seal of Art.

I have spoken.

Chaos
of the Wise,
the mine of the Art,

First Secret of the Stone
of the Philosophers,

the Universal and Miraculous Subject.

The due, proper, and peculiar Thing is:

(1) One, of a single individual.
Natural, excluded from every human composition and artifice, untouched by fire.

(2) For where Nature ceases, there art begins.

(3) Material, of that very same first matter, from which Elohim made this world.

(3) Art imitates Nature in its natural principles.

This material world He created, and produced primordially all material things contained in it, because of which it is called the Most Material, and (4) Catholic or Universal, not yet specified as vegetable, animal, mineral, or metallic, but universal, both Matter and Form together.

(4.) For every like produces its like: as the seed, such the sprout. The universal from the universal, the specified from the specified.

Or from Nature by Nature itself (according to the will and institution of God the Greatest Workman) by natural artifice, almost indescribable, it is segregated primaterially in the Macrocosm, and willingly exhibited to the human race in this Catholic state, beyond the comprehension of many even of the sharp-witted: and therefore, by reason of its Catholicity, the very solecism is plainly rejected.

(5.) Having no likeness of itself, and therefore certain, from which alone the Philosopher’s Stone, by universal spagyric art (Jehovah granting), necessarily wishes, ought, and can be extracted and manifested.

(5.) This is the Tartarus of the Greater World, Catholic, and the Vitriol of the wise: hence also the most sharp Vinegar of the Philosophers.

(6.) Vegetable, Animal, Mineral, and Metallic together.

With Mercury, Sulphur, and Salt.

With salt, also with silver and with the gold of the wise sufficiently enriched, whence also the potable gold of the philosophers, perfect and more than perfect; in itself likewise containing the primordial Catholic matter of metals (or of it) upon the earth, from which Nature similarly produces metals in the earth. The root (Xidar) of all metals.

(7.) Chaos

(8.) Corporeal however, not spiritual, and for that reason.

(9.) Visible

(10.) Adamic — האדמ
that which by the judgment of color surpasses the other colors of certain others, even by no means to be despised, is most select: hence בית־אדמות
Voarch Beth Adamoth, that is, destruction, rebuilding of the house of red earths of the reds with renewal and glory, in the School of the Voarch-Adamicorum.

(11.) In its own way Living

(12.) In itself perfect

(13.) Of the Philosopher’s Stone, having all things in itself, needing nothing from another.

(13.) Egg of the Macrocosm.

(14.) Most ancient, and truly it is the Turnia Arop or the Lead of the wise.

Internally Binary, Quadrinary, Quintessence Catholically animated: and thus it is something not artificially by any man, but composed by Nature itself naturally. Whose, according to Hermes in the Emerald Tablet, the Father is the Sun, the Mother the Moon; the Wind carried it in its belly, and the nurse is the Earth, both in natural generation and in its regeneration, physical-artificial.

Always and everywhere, that is, in whatever regions, whether in the earth or in the visible parts of the mountains, or upon the earth, and on the summits of mountains and in the valleys, or it is found in the sea and in rivers.

In appearance vile, and because of the abundance of superfluous impurities, accidentally and superficially adhering to the marvelous Stone, it has neither form, nor beauty, nor comeliness among the sophists and having with sophists and idiots a mean appearance, yet in the sight of the wise it is precious. Known to all, but recognized by very few. By its own proper name, which the common people also clearly know and mark: and which the Philosopher, if he wills, can express. Although it is otherwise nothing, yet it may not improperly be called All, indeed it is named by all the names of all things.

Freely and for nothing, from God by God, freely bestowed through Nature, so that now as much the poor man as the rich may be able to have it in sufficient quantity.

Strongly Sigillated, Heavy.

A composite water, congealed, resisting Fire, even according to the definition of the Wise in Senior or Hamuel the son of Zadith, in the part of Senior? That is to say, the water of the Philosophers, impure, concreted, dry, not moistening, not wetting the hand, permanent, and—as Morienus speaks—rules over the purification of the Elements; and the Ice of the Wise, relatively fusible.

A Stone, not a Stone.
Mercury, the Philosophers’ Raw.

Shining in the darkness: the Nature of Light.

By its Light enlightening every son of doctrine, coming into this philosophy: a Carbuncle, or Urim Stone, when it is more than perfected.

Our Microcosmos is the microcosmic Microcosm.

Of the seed of the World, the Son of the Greater World, ὁμοούσιος (consubstantial) with its parent; and the splendor of glory and the character of the substance of His primordial matter, Catholic, in whom synoptically Catholic and also σωματικῶς (corporally) dwells all the fullness of Nature, that is, the great El-J-X-Eir, conquering (as Hermes testifies) every subtle thing, and penetrating every solid.

An effigy in the great book of Nature — יהושע (Jehoshua / Jesus Christ) in the state of His humiliation and most vile ignominy, symbolic Pele.

Therefore, such and so great a thing is a marvelous matter, from one Philosopher obtaining that Stone marvelous, glorious, and blessed, so highly celebrated throughout the whole world, a truly primeval medicine, and therefore Catholic and strong, more-than-perfect (Plusquam-Perfectam), in the whole material Nature the highest and only Good, the supreme of Nature itself, through the art of analysis and synthesis, the spagyric (for “Omnia n. Elohim vendunt laboribus” — God sells all things to man’s labor), by Sublimation regenerated / regenerative (Jehovah also hearing prayers in the Oratory, and blessing labors in the Laboratory), they philosophically draw forth, and bring into the light, so as to accomplish perpetual miracles, as Hermete testifies, and Rejunius also many, and hence, since the Goodness, Wisdom, and Power of the Creator is such, likewise from the creature, physically-physico-chymically, also medically, divinely magically, and likewise Christian-Cabalistically (indeed Theosophically) it abundantly ascends:

O the height of the wisdom of God! O the depth of the most sacred Art!

Truly this Catholic or universal medicine of the wise in the human Microcosm, the Triad of natural things of the Macrocosm’s material kinds—Vegetable, as well as Animal and Mineral—possessing a wondrous power, the actions which, through wondrous Fermentation and Projection, or Adaptation (to speak again with Hermes), with miraculous swiftness multiplies and marvelously accomplishes; truly the True Wisdom and of health both present and to be preserved and restored (preservative and curative), and likewise of all the Divine gifts, is our Natural treasure, and the supreme Physico-Artificial, we are all in all the treasures of the Persians, the riches of Croesus, the wealth of Marcus Crassus, Lucullus, and others’ worldly possessions (so teach and affirm the wise) are far surpassed by this.

Therefore also the Medicine of that hyper-Physical, and moreover universal, sole and unique (nor will any other ever be given) in the whole universe, to the highest for eternal salvation; namely Jesus Christ, the Son of God the Only Lord of us, conceived of the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary, suffered, crucified, dead and buried, who descended to the lower regions, on the third day rose again from the dead, ascended into Heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, and from thence shall come to judge the living and the dead: in whom, the only and sole Savior, are contained all the treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge (spiritually), hidden, Colossians 2:3.

Who has been made for us wisdom from God, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. (1 Corinthians 1:30). Yea rather, He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. (1 John 2).

The Stone, indeed, which the builders rejected, made the head of the corner. (Psalm 118:22; 1 Peter 2:7). Glorified, exalted, and wondrous, of Good of all things, the super-supreme of the supreme; through whom God had determined to restore harmony, and to bring all things to perfection, both in heaven and on earth (Ephesians 1:10). The Symbol of harmonic Harmony Symbolic, nor a Mirror of doctrine more lucid, and the Images in the book of Nature, that is, Macrocosmos Natural.

O the harmony of the Stone, and the analogy of both, truly to be admired! O the typic or shadowed fitness, nay rather the venerable representation itself! Here lies the sublime and most profound mystery of the wise, which no man should fail to venerate.

And these are of the Magnesia, and from thence of the Stone of the Philosophers — the universal wonder of the wise.

A wondrous definition, ἐννομάζειν, that is, the very notion itself — namely, teaching truly what it is and that it is, and furthermore even why it is, or what the causes are, not at all obscurely demonstrating this to the faithful son of doctrine.

Something which many, though well-versed in letters, have scarcely believed possible, but rather have until now doubted almost skeptically.

Behold at last (by the grace of God) they now have this sufficiently from me.

They now have what the Ancients might long ago have granted, had it seemed good to them. For, as the wise man testifies, all things have their proper time.

Let him grasp and understand who can grasp and understand. Whoever cannot lawfully declare it, let him keep silence, or depart, or remain as he is. For it is not given to everyone to know the mysteries of Nature without parables.
